When you start training at Gracie Barra Westchase, you quickly realize that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn’t just a random collection of wrestling moves.
It is more like a game of chess where your body parts are the pieces. To keep from getting overwhelmed, we focus on a few fundamental positions that serve as the foundation for everything else. If you understand these, you understand the roadmap of a fight.
The most famous position, and the one that defines the sport, is the Guard. This is when you are on your back, but you are using your legs to control the person on top of the person. Most people think being on the bottom is a losing position, but in the Guard, your legs act like a shield and a weapon. You can use them to keep an attacker away, or you can wrap them around their waist to pull them into a submission like a triangle choke or an armbar. It is the ultimate defensive tool because it allows a smaller person to stay safe while being technically offensive.
Once someone manages to get past your legs, they usually end up in Side Control. This is where the person on top is lying perpendicular to you, using their chest weight to pin you down. It is an incredibly claustrophobic and difficult position to be in if you don’t know the escape. At Gracie Barra Westchase, we spend a lot of time teaching you how to bridge your hips and create just enough space to get your knee back inside. The goal of the person on top is to immobilize you, while your goal is to stay mobile and get back to your feet or back to your Guard.

If the person on top moves from your side to sitting directly on your chest, they have achieved the Mount. This is arguably the most dominant position in a real world self defense scenario. Gravity is working entirely for the person on top. They can use their weight to smother you or apply chokes. Learning how to survive and escape the Mount is one of the first things every beginner at Gracie Barra masters because it removes the fear of being pinned by someone heavier.
Then there is the Back Mount, which is the gold standard of Jiu Jitsu. This is when you are behind your opponent with your legs hooked around their thighs and your arms controlled around their neck. In this position, you can see everything they are doing, but they can’t see you. It is the most persuasive place to be in a fight because the person on the back has almost total control with very little risk of being hit or countered.
Finally, we talk about the Knee on Belly. It is exactly what it sounds like: the person on top has one knee across your midsection and their other leg out for balance. It is a transitional position that is great for controlling someone who is trying to scramble away. It allows the person on top to maintain great vision of their surroundings while keeping the person on the bottom pinned and uncomfortable.
Understanding these positions isn’t just about winning a match; it’s about knowing where you are at all times. Once you can identify these landmarks, the chaos of a struggle starts to feel like a manageable problem. You stop guessing and start calculating your next move based on where your weight is and where your opponent’s levers are exposed.
